Its Not Just a Game

Vivek has published an open letter from an Indian Cricket fan who gives a sharp retort to all those ‘losers’ in the Indian media and “intellectual” circles who yap non-stop about how it is all only a game after all and wonder why Indian fans “overreact”.

Stop saying “it’s just a game” because for us, it is clearly not.And by “us” I mean millions of other people like me. Many of us grew up at a time when India was short on Role Models, Cable TV, Internet, Multiplexes, Video Games, Mobile Phones, Cars, Shopping Malls and many other things. In those days, a good spell by Kapil Dev and a good inning by Sachin Tendulkar were the only things that brought some cheer in our drab lives. Little surprise then, that we fell in love with the game. So much in love, in fact, that a good Indian performance was all we cared about. And why not? It is our team. Isn’t it?

  1. I am amused that you have grouped everyone who thinks “it’s just a game” into “liberal extremists”. That’s quite a leap.

  2. I also grouped them into ‘Media’. The funny thing is these are the very guys who make demigods of 11 very human lifeforms by hyping the whole thing to a crescendo, whip passions by running ads about pepsi blue billion, tigers on field, cricket in traffic jams etc… why don’t they at the time say that “It’s only a game”? and desist from hyping it up like that?

And if you thought that it is a tiny minority of extremists who are involved in that “overreaction”. sorry to disappoint. just flick the TV channels or pick the newspapers and see how they are actually still whipping public passions by their coverage. They are effectively fanning a public outrage and having it both ways. whipping passions on the one hand also pontifacting about “how its all only a game”.

sorry to bust the blue billion hype bubble 🙂

  3. Apollo, you are right.. not only can media not have it both ways, but if they insist that it’s just a game.. then they should perhaps stop writing/talking about it and leave it to those who think it is more than just a game.

Blue billion bubble.. was waiting to be burst.. but one has to admit, the ads were good 🙂

  4. Vivek, Perhaps India should participate in the ‘Ads World cUp’ instead ;). They might actually make it to the second round.
