Supreme Court issues Notice to NBA for illegally receiving foreign funds

The Supreme Court has cracked the Whip against Medha Patkar and her “Narmada Bachao Andolan” for illegally receiving foreign funds without due authorisation. This was in response to a Public Interest Petition filed by National Council for Civil Liberties president V.K. Saxena asking for a CBI probe.

The Honourable Supreme Court also issued notices to the centre and the states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.

Counsel for the National Council for Civil Liberties said the NBA had been stalling the Sardar Sarovar project at the behest of foreign agencies. No action was taken on a first information report registered in 2000 despite the Madhya Pradesh Vigilance Department giving a report against the NBA.

Mr. Saxena alleged that the agitations by the NBA, led by Ms. Patkar, virtually resulted in suspension of several important hydel projects including the Sardar Sarovar and Maheshwar projects. In spite of the final report by the police, the vigilance report and hundreds of FIRs, authorities had not taken any action against NBA, its members and associates, who were getting large amounts of foreign money and local funds to subvert hydro projects, the petitioner alleged.

He said the NBA’s activities were violative of the fundamental rights of the general public and all beneficiaries of hydel projects.

In response Medha patkar has denied the “allegations”.

A case of the Chickens coming home to roost.
